Optics is a vast and complex field of technology. It not only includes classical imaging optics but other fields, too, such as waveguides and diffraction, holography, interferometry, and the related fields of spectroscopy, light generation, and light detection. Optics also has numerous applications, e.g. in sensing technology, material processing, data processing, and communication.
Optics can be challenging in patenting since it is often hard to explain the technology and invention to the examiners at the patent offices or the judges at court. And an in-depth knowledge of the field is a prerequisite for efficiently communicating with the inventors.
