Each block contains transactions and other information. The chain creates a permanent, immutable record of all transactions written to the block chain. Transactions can also contain small programs called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smart_contract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smart contracts<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blockchain-based networks, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bitcoin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bitcoin<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethereum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethereum<\/a>, are consensus-based electronic ledgers based on such blocks. In addition to the financial sector (Keyword \u201cFintec\u201d), blockchain technology offers a variety of other applications, e.g. in the areas of supply chain management,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Identity_management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">identity management<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data_management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data management<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Health_care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health care<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyber_security_standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cybersecurity<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eblum.ch\/en\/areas-of-technology\/internet-of-things-iot\/\">Internet of Things<\/a>, see our posts. For a transaction to be written to the blockchain, it must be &#8220;validated&#8221; by the network. In other words, the network nodes must obtain approval for blocks to be written to the block chain. This agreement can be achieved through various consensus protocols such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proof_of_work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proof-of-work<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proof_of_stake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proof-of-stake<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protection of blockchain technologies is challenging under patent law. Such inventions are assessed and formulated according to the special standards for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eblum.ch\/en\/areas-of-technology\/computer-engineering\/\">computer-implemented inventions<\/a>. The European Patent Office held a\u00a0conference\u00a0on this subject in December 2018, at which the importance of patent protection for blockchain technologies was emphasized.
